reducing your home's carbon footprint
weatherization Jobs
These are the jobs we currently take on, with a focus on training youth for green-collar jobs.
Conservation
- Draft-seal doors, windows & outlets on exterior walls.
- Conserve with your thermostat
- Installing a programmable thermostat to drop the temperature when no one’s at home could save about 500 pounds of CO2 a year for each 2º adjustment.
- We install and/or program thermostats so you're not heating or cooling the house when no one is home. (link to recommended models on products page).
- Conserve
on your hot water
- Install insulating blanket on your hot water heater. This in itself could save you about 1000 pounds of CO2 each year.
- Turning down your water heater by 10º could save you 500 pounds of CO2 a year. We can show you how to lower the setting, while your showers remain enjoyable.
- Installing a low-flow showerhead could save you 250 pounds of CO2 a year. We can certainly recommend and install one for you.
- Conserve on your lighting
- Turning lights off when no one’s in the room saves 100% of the electricity! We can recommend and install timers for lighting that you leave on for an extended time.
- Conserve with insulation
- If your basement feels too warm, you're losing heat before it even gets to your living space!
- Wrap your hot water heating system pipes with Reflectix® Pipe Wrap, reducing heat loss. The product is rated at R 4.0 and reflects upto 97% of the heat (link to products page).
- Wrap the ducts so you don't lose heat to the basement. (link to products page).
- Insulate full height basements - If your floors feel cold & you can see the ceiling joists when in the basement, call for a consultation. We use cement to seal drafts between sub-floor & walls. Then fill between joists with Ultra Touch recycled denim insulation (R19) to reduce the air flow and add insulation. As a finishing touch, we install a flexible aluminum foil (Reflectix®) to create a barrier seal.
- Conserve when doing the laundry
- Hanging a load of laundry instead of the dryer saves 5 pounds of CO2 each load, or about 600 pounds each year. We install indoor or outdoor clotheslines.
Efficiency
- Efficient Lighting
- Replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb will save 150 pounds of CO2 a year & 75% of the electricity, not to mention reduced mercury emissions. Best done at light fixtures used the most.
- We can assist with the selection of efficient lighting for each space in your home. Payback for replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs is usually within the year. (link to recommended bulbs on products page).
- Efficient Appliances
- We install ceiling fans – They’re quiet, efficient
and keep the air moving so you’re comfortable in higher
temperatures.
- If you're looking to replace an appliance, we can recommend energy smart replacements. Examples are: clothes washers, dryers, dehumidifiers, air conditionings, computers, room heaters, gas fireplaces & woodburning stoves
- We can also calculate payback time from the energy savings using a watt-meter (link to photo & products page)
Clean renewables
- We recommend purchasing renewable electricity generated from wind, sun & bio-gas with the savings from conservation & efficiency. We can explain your options.
- A solar hot water heater on your roof may reduce your emissions by 1500 pounds of CO2, depending on your source of electricity, and how much hot water you use. We can analyze your needs and explain your options.
